Web page layout – hmv.com

ProximityThe headings stay the same no matter what page is selected. The distance between the different tables remains consistent.

Alignment

The page is laid out the same way throughout the site. If you select the DVD tab, blu-ray tab, games tab or music tab etc, the same structural layout is on each page.

The left and right tables are the same width as each other, though not the same length. The hmv.com title is aligned to the search bar on the page.

Repitition

The design has been repeated throughout the whole site. The title header hmv.com is always on top. The search bar stays in the same postion. The strong colours of pink and black have remained consistent. The pink highlighter to denote a selected heading is the the same throughout.

Contrast

The tabs are contrasted using a black background for the main tabs and pink background for the sub-tabs. Within each tab a different colour scheme is used, “games” = yellow etc. The colour scheme is repeated on the left table underneath “browse all departments”. The focal point of the page is an image to the left of the centre table and bold writing to the right.

The blackberry is a smart phone that is known globally as a tool in business. Everything from the customers email account to sales data to reports can be accessed via the smartphone. Customers can access EPOS systems on site instead of connecting directly to them. Customers can view their emails whether they are using Microsoft, Lotus, Domino or Novell.

Heuristics

The following 3 links are to three documents relating to the heuristics that I chose.I choose two national airlines, Aerlingus and AerArann. I choose an Aer lingus flight from Dublin to London and an Aer Arann flight. They don’t fly to London so i choose Dublin to Manchester instead.

Multimedia in Education – NASA

NASA use a combination of text, video, interactive images and podcasts to educate. They rang from toddlers to those in higher education, and even have a section for educators themselves.

They also have an excellent multimedia section where images of the universe can be viewed in brilliant detail.

Companies are discovering new ways to advertise everyday. One of the most used is social networking sites. Companies advertise on facebook by creating a profile and then they advertise on the right hand side of the profile page thats relevent.

Companies can also track where their customers are, by the changing status on their customers facebook page. This makes for a more effective marketing campaign.

Future of the Internet

According to The future of the Internet III,

The mobile phone/laptop/device will be the main source of internet connectivity
Privacy of people and organisations will be decreased.
File sharing software will always be there and will become more sophisticated.
Personal time and work time will be more blurred as connectivity increases.
Updates on the current networks will have to be rebuilt from scratch due to so many different types of designs.

All these create a world where we rely almost 100% on the internet and our abilty to be connected.

Adobe Systems

Founded in 1982 they have centered on creating multimedia and creativity software products.

They first entered the market with Adobe Illustrator. It created a vector based drawing program for the Apple Macintosh. in 1989 Photoshop was created by Adobe which was to become its flagship product. 20 years later it is still one of the best selling product in the Adobe range

Adobe flash player has become the standard for rich web content. It is used in most websites that have interactive aspects to their sites, such as games, videos etc.

Pioneers of the Internet

Vannevar Bush was instrumental in the conception of the internet.

He developed a concept called the memex during the 1930′s which stores all information but does not have to be accessed in a linear fashion. Any item can lead to another immeadiatly

He published a paper in The Atlantic in 1945 called As We May Think.

Multimedia in Advertising

Multimedia and ”Wicked the Musical”

One of my favourite musicals currently on the West End in London is ”Wicked the Musicals”. Using a combination of video’s, sliding gallery’s, text and hyperlinks this website advertises the musical using every media available. It even uses software that translates the text to other languages. The Video’s can be selected and played on the site, direct links are provided to ticketmaster, twitter, facebook and myspace.

The iPad in Corporate communications

Steve Jobs demonstrating Apples new wonder product. Like the iPod has changed the way we listen to music, the iPad can revolutionise the way we do business. Using a high-resolution, 9.7 inch LED-backlit IPS screen, weighing just 1.5 pounds and 0.5 inches thick, it can be used as a cross between a blackberry and a laptop. This means that more business can be done outside the office like a blackberry but with more features like a laptop.
